What is DHEA-S?
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is an important precursor hormone and is the highest circulating steroid present in the human body. DHEA-S is predominantly produced by the adrenal glands and is an excellent indicator of adrenal hormone production. Although DHEA-S itself only has weak hormonal activity, it can be metabolized into more active androgens (e.g. testosterone) and estrogens (e.g. estradiol). DHEA-S contributes to male traits and also has neurosteroid activity, meaning it can influence brain function.
Abnormal DHEA-S Levels
Excess DHEA-S can be a sign of adrenal tumours (malignant or benign), enlargement of an adrenal gland, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or polycystic ovary syndrome (in females). Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a series of inherited adrenal gland disorders that cause early puberty in males, and abnormal hair growth and irregular menstrual periods in females.
Low DHEA-S levels can be caused by type 2 diabetes, adrenal deficiency, kidney complications, and anorexia. The symptoms can include prolonged fatigue, difficulty concentrating, lower sex drive, increased risk of osteoporosis and dementia.

Details and FAQs
Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about our Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S) Test. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.
How does the Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate (DHEA-S) Test work?
Self-collect your sample following the detailed instructions included in the kit. Place your sample in the specimen bag provided and mail it back to the lab using the prepaid envelope inside the kit.
Our lab uses a verified and approved chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA) to accurately measure your DHEA-S levels. Your results are available through our online portal as soon as testing is complete.
Will I receive any guidance with my results?
All result reports will include brief and easy to understand interpretations of each of the biomarkers tested. Background information is also available, but we recommend that you share your test results with your healthcare provider to obtain the most benefit from your test results.
Are there medical professionals involved in the process?
All of our tests are developed with advice and input from medical professionals.
Do DHEA-S levels fluctuate during the day?
DHEA-S concentrations remain relatively stable throughout the day, so the time of blood sample collection is not as important as for some other tests. However, we still recommend collecting your blood sample first thing in the morning and returning to our laboratory on the same day.
