Testosterone is a vital hormone for sexual health and vitality. Do you produce the right amount?
Testosterone has an important role during the life cycle of both males and females. Testosterone levels are associated with sex formation, pubertal effects (e.g. remodelling of facial bones, acne, pubic hair, and deepening of voice), normal sperm development, enhanced muscle growth, and the regulation of platelet aggregation.
Various factors, including obesity, medications, alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, type 2 diabetes, and other illnesses, can increase the risk of lower testosterone levels.
Why consider this test?
Testosterone is responsible for many essential functions; hence low testosterone levels can cause a wide variety of symptoms.
Low testosterone affects almost 40% of men aged 45 and older, a well as many younger males, so don’t ignore your symptoms. Take this simple test today to start the first step back to optimal health.
This test also measures your levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin to enable the calculation of free testosterone. Free testosterone and testosterone that is weakly bound to albumin is considered the biologically active form of testosterone.
Testosterone therapy and lifestyle changes (e.g. increased exercise for overweight males) are effective ways to increase testosterone levels and get this essential hormone back to optimal levels.
Signs of low testosterone include:
Low sex drive
Erectile dysfunction
Infertility
Fatigue
Reduced muscle mass
Weight gain
Osteoporosis
Depression
Irritability
What’s included in the Advanced Male Hormone Test?

Total Testosterone
Testosterone is the primary sex hormone in males. It is secreted from the testicles, and plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues (e.g. testes and prostate), as well as promoting secondary sexual characteristics (e.g. increased muscle, bone mass, and body hair). A total testosterone measurement includes free testosterone (unbound), as well as testosterone that is bound to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin.

Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG)
SHBG is a protein that binds to and inhibits the function of most (about 2/3) of the testosterone circulating in the blood. If an individual has abnormal SHBG levels, the total testosterone assay alone may not provide an accurate analysis of testosterone levels. The inclusion of SHBG in this testosterone test enables the calculation of free testosterone.

Albumin
Albumin is the most abundant protein in the blood. Approximately 1/3 of the testosterone in blood is bound to albumin, but can dissociate easily to be in a form that can act on other tissues. The inclusion of albumin in this testosterone test enables the calculation of free testosterone.

Free Testosterone
Free testosterone refers to the small fraction of total testosterone that is not bound to proteins (SHBG and albumin). Free testosterone plus the albumin-bound fraction of testosterone is bioavailable testosterone that can act on target tissues. The determination of free testosterone is especially valuable in individuals who have low testosterone levels.

Male Hormone FAQ
Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about this test. Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.
Are there medical professionals involved in the process?
All of our tests are developed with advice and input from medical professionals.
Will I receive any guidance with my results?
All result reports will include brief and easy to understand interpretations of each of the biomarkers tested. Background information is also available, but we recommend that you share your test results with your healthcare provider to obtain the most benefit from your test results.
How does the Advanced Male Hormone Test work?
Self-collect your sample following the detailed instructions included in the kit. Place your sample in the specimen bag provided and mail it back to the lab using the prepaid envelope inside the kit.
Our lab uses verified and approved chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassays (CMIAs) and chemistry assays to accurately measure your total testosterone, SHBG levels, and albumin levels, to enable the calculation of free testosterone. Your results are available through our online portal as soon as testing is complete.
What are my options if I have abnormal results?
It is important to share any abnormal results with you healthcare provider, as they can take into consideration your medical history, any previous test results, physical examinations, and other factors to determine the best treatment option. Testosterone therapy is available for men with low testosterone levels, although often other changes, such as more physical exercise for overweight men, can increase testosterone levels.
What are possible causes of low testosterone?
Low testosterone can occur due to conditions that males are born with, such as Klinefelter syndrome, or testosterone may also decline for other reasons, including testicle injury, chemotherapy, infection, autoimmune disease, malnutrition, and hormonal imbalances.
