What is your reproductive potential? This test can help tell you
Ovarian reserve is a measure of the reproductive potential of a woman. It is based on the number and the quality of eggs that are left within the ovaries. Lower ovarian reserve, due to a lower egg count or lower quality of eggs, can result in fertility issues.
Smoking, radiation treatment for cancer, and ovarian surgery can affect ovarian reserve. Ovarian reserve also diminishes with age. This is why many couples experience fertility issues when the female partner is over the age of 35.
Who is this test for?
This test is targeted towards women who are:
- Considering getting pregnant
- Experiencing difficulties getting pregnant
- Determining how effectively they will respond to IVF
This test provides an analysis of a key hormone that regulates the menstrual cycle and egg production. Results from this test can be used in conjunction with other factors (e.g. medical history and symptoms) to determine if a woman has diminished ovarian reserve.
Why consider this test?
Age affects fertility: 1 in 3 women over 35 years have fertility problems
Irregular or heavy periods
Difficulty conceiving
For determining if fertility treatments are right for you
If contemplating egg preservation for pregnancy at a later date
What’s included in the Ovarian Reserve Test?

Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
FSH stimulates the development of the follicle (which houses the egg) during the first half of the menstrual cycle. FSH levels are at the lowest at the beginning of the cycle, fluctuating during each menstrual cycle, and typically remain high in menopause. Higher FSH levels early in the menstrual cycle can result in faster egg development and improper maturation.
To determine the ovarian reserve of a woman, FSH levels are measured between day 2 and 3 of the menstrual cycle. In general, women with higher FSH levels this early in their menstrual cycle are less likely to have a baby even if they have ovarian induction through IVF.
