The thyroid is a butterfly shaped organ responsible for releasing a number of different hormones that control metabolism. Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are two of the main hormones produced by the thyroid. Their release is regulated by the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone or TSH. Alterations to TSH levels are indicative of early thyroid malfunction, as elevated TSH levels suggest insufficient amounts of T3 and T4 are produced.
Both T3 and T4 exist in two forms:
the protein bound form and the free form. The free form represents the biologically active fraction of these hormones. Free T4 (fT4) levels are used to diagnose both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Free T3 (fT3) levels are often used to diagnose hyperthyroidism where too much thyroid hormone is produced.
Thyroid antibody tests are used to autoimmune thyroid disorders. The presence of thyroid antibodies in your blood can indicate that your immune system is attacking the thyroid. Individuals with Grave’s disease produce antibodies against the TPO enzyme. Those with Hashimoto disease have elevated levels of both Tg and TPO antibodies.
Overproduction of thyroid hormones or hyperthyroidism can lead to
- weight loss
- fatigue
- irregular periods
- sleep loss
- goiters
Underproduction of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism) is linked to
- weight gain
- fatigue
- low heartbeat
- dry skin
- impaired memory
This test will help you track your thyroid hormone levels and help uncover your risk of autoimmune thyroid diseases.
